About the
Rezum Procedure

Rezum is a quick, minimally invasive treatment designed to shrink the prostate, restore natural urinary flow and maintain sexual function without the need for major surgery.

What is BPH?

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is an enlargement of the prostate that occurs naturally in all men as they age. BPH is the most common cause of bothersome urinary symptoms in men over the age of 50 because it causes obstruction of the urethra and bladder.

More than 50% of men over the age of 50 have BPH-associated urinary symptoms:

  • Weak/slow urinary stream

  • Frequent urination, day and night

  • Hesitancy and straining to urinate

  • Urgency (frequent sensation of having to urinate urgently)

BPH symptoms can worsen with time if not treated and may result in the following complications:

Interrupted sleep

Fatigue

Anxiety

Depression

Reduction in quality of life

Urinary tract infections

Inability to urinate & requiring a catheter

Formation of stones in the bladder

Reduction in kidney function

The Rezum Procedure: Simple, Safe, Effective

Rezum uses the natural power of water vapor (steam) to treat the root cause of BPH. It is a quick, non-surgical treatment designed to get you back to your life with minimal downtime. Unlike more invasive surgeries, Rezum is specifically designed to target only the obstructing  tissue, allowing you to restore your quality of life while preserving sexual and ejaculatory function.

How Rezum Works

Targeted Relief

During the Rezum procedure, our urologists↗ use a specialized handheld device to deliver sterile water vapor directly into the enlarged prostate tissue.

Natural Prostate Shrinkage

The steam releases targeted thermal energy that causes the obstructing prostate cells to die.

Your Body’s Natural Healing

After the Rezum procedure, your body naturally absorbs the treated tissue over the next several weeks. As the prostate shrinks, the pressure on your urethra and bladder is reduced.

Restored Urine Flow & Improved Sexual Function

The result of the Rezum procedure is a wider urethral channel, significantly improved urine flow, and a reduction in frustrating daily symptoms.

Rezum Explained

The Rezum Experience

We prioritize your comfort and your time. Performed at a chartered surgical facility in Edmonton, the Rezum procedure experience is designed to be as stress-free and pain-free as possible.

No General Anesthesia

The procedure requires only mild sedation administered by a certified anaesthesia specialist. No general anesthesia (being "put under") is required.

Remarkably Fast

The actual Rezum procedure only takes 10 minutes.

Rapid Recovery

You will typically be ready to leave the clinic within 60 to 90 minutes of your procedure. Because there are no surgical incisions, most men return to their regular activities within just a few days.

Is Rezum Right for Me?

Men over 50 with moderate to severe BPH symptoms

Men with prostate sizes 30–80cc (some men with larger prostates also may qualify)

Men with symptoms despite BPH medications who want to avoid the risks of invasive hospital surgery

Men who do not tolerate BPH medications or want  to stop taking daily BPH medications

Men who want to preserve their sexual function

Is Rezum safe?

Rezum is a minimally invasive, non-surgical treatment with a well-established safety profile. It has been used to treat men since 2019. Because it uses natural water vapor rather than surgical blades or high-heat lasers, it is a less-invasive alternative for patients looking to avoid the risks of traditional surgery.

Recovery Process after Rezum

While the procedure itself takes only about 10 minutes, your body will need time to naturally absorb the treated tissue.

Here is what you can expect in the first few weeks after the Rezum procedure.

The First Week

A temporary urinary catheter is typically required for 5-7 days to allow the initial swelling to subside and ensure you are comfortable.

Temporary Symptoms

As the prostate begins to shrink, you may experience temporary urgency, frequency or a mild burning sensation during urination. Some patients notice a small amount of blood in their urine.

The First Three Months

While some men see improvement within two weeks, the full benefits of the procedure are usually realized at the three-month mark as the prostate reaches its new, smaller size.

Side Effects

As with all other medical and procedural BPH treatments, Rezum may have side effects. Fortunately, clinical trials demonstrate that the side effects are mild and usually temporary.

Most side effects include burning with urination (17%), blood in the urine (12%), urinary frequency and urgency (6%), temporary inability to urinate requiring a temporary catheter (4%) and urinary tract infection (4%).

Less common side effects include blood in the semen and decreased ejaculate volume.

Most side effects resolve within three weeks.
