Rezum is a good option for most men over age 50 with bothersome BPH-related voiding symptoms. Clinical studies demonstrate that Rezum is particularly effective in men with a prostate size 30–80cc who have bothersome BPH symptoms despite lifestyle changes or medications or those who are intolerant of medications or wish to avoid medications.
No. Rezum is a minimally invasive procedure performed under sedation at a private, non-hospital surgical facility in Edmonton.
Rezum only requires a brief intravenous sedation provided by a certified anesthesiologist. Pain and discomfort is minimal. Full anesthesia is not required.
The actual Rezum procedure only takes 10 minutes to perform. Most patients are able to go home within 1–1.5 hours after the procedure is completed.
Recovery & Results
Clinical studies show that most men can safely return to regular activities within a few days of the Rezum procedure. That being said, a temporary catheter is necessary for the first 5–7 days which could limit activity.
Although some men may experience BHP symptom relief as soon as 2 weeks after the Rezum procedure, the response is usually not immediate. Shrinkage of the prostate after Rezum is a gradual process wherein the body naturally absorbs the vaporized prostate tissue. Clinical studies demonstrate that symptom improvement may take up to 3 months.
Rezum has the lowest risk of sexual dysfunction among all procedural and surgical BPH treatments. Clinical studies demonstrate that the risk of erectile dysfunction is only 1%. This is because the water vapor does not extend beyond the walls of the prostate and damage the adjacent erectile nerves. The risk of ejaculatory dysfunction is less than 10%.
Most men continue to enjoy significant relief and a better quality of life five years after their Rezum procedure. Up to 10% of patients may have a relapse of their BPH symptoms within two years after treatment. When we confirm that you are a good candidate for Rezum, the chances of needing any further treatment over the next five years are very low (<5% in 5 years).
